Ovid’s Metamorphoses is a collection of myths remastered to fit a theme of transformation. In these stories, the characters are confronted with a problem or a situation and how they react determines their fate. These fates take the form of physical alterattions. Often people transform into flora, fauna, or different human forms. In Metamorphoses the metaphors utilized by Ovid involve the natural world. These mataphors are natural for us to understand because nature is a common reference point for us all. While Ovid’s meaning behind the forms he chooses in his transformations seem simple, recognizing why characters are transformed can be confounding. The key to interpreting Ovid’s transformations is in realizing to whom the transformation is directed and this may not always be the one being transformed. The transformations that take place in Metamorphoses symbolize traits in the transformed and the transformer in both positive and negative aspects. Ovid uses trans formations to exaggerate the traits of the charater being transformed. In Book III, Narcissus is pursued by hordes of admirers. He is a young man and is exceptionally beautiful. Despite his abundance of suitors, Narcissus prefers to remain single. How is Clueless a youth picture genre film? Essay The makers of Clueless have tried to reinforce the self centeredness of Chers personality through the camera shots. In the close-up shots they concentrate on her hair, make-up and all the things that she is most concerned about. Cher believes that she is a trend -setter, when shes walking into school we are led to believe everybodys following her because of the way the camera is pulling away from her, but actually they are just coming into school the same as she is, this is another important element of a youth picture genre film because Cher thinks that everything revolves around her. I am comparing two of the characters; Josh and Cher because of the differences between them. Notably Cher is a very shallow person and Josh is a very deep intellectual, Cher is mostly interested in herself, clothes, fashion and other peoples love life, where as Josh is interested with the world, the environment and unconcerned with his image. Although, they see through these differences and are attracted to each other because of them, Josh likes Chers Cluelessness, her naivety and the fact that he feel protective towards her, Cher likes Josh because hes reliable and accdepts her for what she is, she also likes the fact that he helps her to grow up and thats the whole plot of the film to watch someone turn their life around and change their whole view of it. This is often found in a youth picture genre. In the last few minutes of the film Clueless Cher and Josh finally realise and admit their feelings and talk about their respect towards and acceptance of each other. Josh tells Cher she is gorgeous and popular and they kiss, we can then hear Chers voice-over saying you can guess what happens next , this then cuts to the wedding of the teachers and Cher finishes by saying As if, Im only 16 and this is California not Kentucky! At the wedding, Josh is fitting in as one of the lads and Cher and her friends are discussing their weddings. Cher then goes to catch the bouquet, theres a lot of shrieking and jollity, and the film finishes with Cher and Josh kissing once again. This is a classic happy ending with everything being tied up and resolved, Cher and Josh are together, the teachers are married, Tai and Travis are also together, so overall everybody is joyful and feeling good about themselves and everybody else. This is typical of youth picture genre as nobody is left out and they are included and involved with the ending. From watching the film and writing about all the elements, I have learnt a lot more about all the main ingredients that make up a youth picture genre. A youth picture genre focuses primarily on the age of the characters, the locations used, the interests of teenagers and in my opinion the film Clueless includes these. Such as the love dilemma between Cher and Josh, the general settings(e. g. the local high school)and that all the main characters are aged between 13-25. I think that Clueless includes real teenage issue and the interests e. g. fashion, relationships and music, it also shows the transformations of people growing up and also learning to accept other people for whom they are, or want to be. That is why it is strongly evident that Clueless is a youth picture film.

The Maya Civilization February 5, 2001 The Maya Civilization The ancient Maya once occupied a vast geographic area in Central America. Their civilization inhabited an area that encompasses Mexicos Yucatan peninsula and parts of the states of Chiapas and Tabasco, as well as Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. From the third to the ninth century, Maya civilization produced awe-inspiring temples and pyramids, highly accurate calendars, mathematics and hieroglyphics, and a complex social and political order (Collapse... 1). Urban centers were important to the Maya during the Classic period; they offered the Mayans a central place to practice religion. The Mayan culture can be traced back to 1500 BC, entering the Classic period about 300 AD and flourishing between 600 and 900 AD. The basis of the culture was farming. They cultivated food crops such as maize (corn), beans, squash, and chili peppers. They also cultivated cash crops such as cotton and cacao (Palfrey 1). Maize was the principal food of the Mayas and maize production was the central economic activity. The Mayas, forced to cultivate in a tropical rain forest, used slash and burn agriculture. The growth is so rapid in the rain forest that the nutrients provided by dead plants and animal feces get used very quickly. This causes the soil to be unfertile within a few years. The Mayans would then have to use new land. Because of this, the Mayans required huge amounts of land to feed their people. The population, throughout the Classic period, remained small. Slash and burn agriculture is also labor intensive. It required the people to spend an average of 190 days in agricultu ral work (Hooker 4). Despite the difficulty of this labor, the remainder of the year was used to build and maintain cities, develop art, and continue to enhance their literature. The cities, or urban centers, were built primarily as ceremonial centers. The priestly class lived in the cities, while the general population lived away in small farming villages. The priests would carry out daily religious duties, particularly sacrifices, and the peasants would gather periodically for religious ceremonies and festivals. They built the ceremonial centers in a specific design for religious practices. They constructed tall pyramid temples, warren-like single story palaces, and a ball court that was surrounded by a broad central plaza. The architectural features of the Mayan pyramids include towering roofs, corbel vaults, and elaborate embellishment with stucco reliefs (Palfrey 2). It is amazing to imagine the detail that the Mayans were able to create in their architecture with only primitive tools. For the Mayans, science and religion were linked. Time was extremely important and their agriculture and religious ceremonies required a system that could record time. That need for structure is probably the reason that the Mayans developed such an amazingly accurate calendar. They also developed a complex style of hieroglyphic writing that we have not fully deciphered. Through their knowledge of astronomy and mathematics they calculated the lunar cycle, predicted eclipses, and formulated a unique calendar system was very accurate. Their calendar was only one day off every 6000 years. That makes it more accurate than our calendar today (Hooker 6). Two fundamental ideas in mathematics that were discovered by the Mayans are the position value and the concept of zero. The Hindu was the only other antiquated culture to develop this and they did it 300 years after the Mayans. They are such a simple concept that is a distinct stroke of genius that these people discovered them (Dumois 1). Mayan numerals were written with only three symbols. A dot represents one, a line represents five, and a glyph of a seashell represents zero. Mayan religion was obsessed with time. Mayan religion was a part of the Mayans entire life. One important aspect of their religion is that it is based on accommodating humanity to the cycles of the universe. They believed that the universe functions in a logical, cyclical, and predicable way; human beings can exploit that cyclical nature by accommodating themselves to those cycles (Hooker 5). Religious ceremonies involved dancing, competition, dramatic performances, prayer, and sacrifice. The gods required nourishment from human beings in order to work. The bulk of sacrifice involved some form of human sacrifice. The majority of
